Mechanical Universe: Nocturne

This is a piece that I brought from Boston to finish while a resident at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts. I have taken the idea of a nocturne and used a limited palette of silvers and grey to suggest Whistler's famous twilight images and his equal interest in the abstract qualities of limited tones. These formal effects have been channeled via Mondrian to create an abstracted choreography between the paintings, in order to echo the eerie sense of longing in the sounds contributed by the Belgian sound artist Yannick Franck. To this, Chang-Chih and Yen-Hsiang have overlaid a video of LED images, related to the tempo of the moving sculptures and their sounds, in order to amplify the relationship between the visual and aural rhythms.

Starry Night (on Mars)

When we were all showing each other our work, the idea of a shooting star came up; and everyone instantly locked onto it. Then, when we met again at the museum, we decided that we would create a sky - complete with shooting stars and a cosmic atmosphere. At the same time, we talked about how we all have the same sky above us; but we are culturally different and as such our myths and tales about the stars differ. However, what does seem universal in these stories is that they represent a projection of our desires, resulting in our interest to also make a star manual that would be open to everyone's own cultural interpretation.

Crack Down 2.2

All our work, on some level, is an investigation of fragments of the human body or personality. Our investigation is undertaken to better understand the complexities of both these fragments and their role in understanding ourselves and those around us. For this exhibition we have decided to switch from our more usual visual format to focus on the sound of the human voice. We, thus, have created a dialog of disembodied voices so that the audience also can experience what we believe - that such a fragment of ourselves can convey a great deal.

"Hello?"

Our team realized that what unites our work is the idea that the connection between people is fragile - that there is an invisible thread that unites us all and that we should be mindful of it. But that thread is not always apparent, this can cause a feeling of isolation. For that reason, we wanted to reach out to people to remind them and us that we are connected. In this way, we can validate our existence. Our aim with this work is to reach out for love and hope.

The alarm goes off: If an anonymous phone rings, will you take a chance and answer it? Or will you just ignore us?

Accessories to journey

What we see as the theme linking our work is a searching for something – a
quest. This search is ongoing and ever-changing. In our work we, thus,
decided to invite the audience to join us on this journey: We have
provided moveable frames, so in the process of finding the image that the
viewers want to ‘frame’, we also offer them, like ourselves, a time for
self-reflection.
